The Mata-Jardim José do Canto is located on the south bank of Lagoa das Furnas, surrounding the chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias and the two buildings located next to the bank of the lagoon: an Anglo-Flemish cottage that was called "navigation pavilion" "and today is the Casa dos Barcos (rural tourism), and a challet Franco-Swiss who was called the "fishing pavilion" today Casa da Lagoa, also converted to Rural Tourism.
In the current property, the layout of the landscaped area, with about 10ha remains preserved according to the French project.
At the west end is the well-known "Vale dos Fetos" rebuilt in the mid-20th century by the parents of the current owner, Ernesto Hintze Ribeiro and his wife Maria Josefa Gabriela Borges de Sousa Jácome Correia.
The streets of Mata Jardim are flanked by beautiful camel trees, many of them centuries old, which bloom in the period from January to May and which constitute one of the best collections of ancient camellias.
Furnas are known for their camellias and an exhibition of these flowers takes place every year in February or March.
